ABC's of Love by Zig Ziglar

Sharing the article below to parents of our children-

The ABC's of Love
By Zig Ziglar

Psychiatrist Louis B. Cady of Evansville, Indiana, gives us the ABC's of love as it relates to our children. When I read this I knew that I wanted to share it with my readers. Enjoy!

Accept your child--not as perfect, not as a "model," but as a basically good kid.
Be there! You can't be absent all the time, nor can you show your interest or love for your child if you aren't present. Be there for football games, dance recitals and the like.
Care for your child. Even when s(he) messes up!
Discipline; don't punish. It takes "guts" to discipline; it only takes a "wimp" of a parent to let kids get by with anything.
Expect the best: Generally, you'll get what you expect (bad or good).
Family--the center around which the child's life should revolve. School, friends and games are the "planets" which should circle around the "sun" of the family.
God/Spiritual - pick yours carefully; there will ALWAYS be a "god" of something in your and your family's life. Make sure it's a good one. This doesn't mean you have to be a "super-Christian" or go to church seven days a week. It DOES mean that you must instill some sense of spirituality, moral order, and ethics in your child.

Managing Your Time

Time is something all of us have in the same amount; but the number of things to do and events to attend are not the same for everyone. Students seem to be overloaded with homework, projects, sports events, chores at home ( or are you exempted from that?)and of course socializing. Is there time for piano/violin/voice practice? If you're taking music lessons, you'd better make time for practice, or you'll not be getting your money's worth. As someone said, progress takes place during the daily practice. And playing your instrument for an hour isn't necessarily practice. Focus, repetition of certain parts of the music until the sound is better, or that section of the piece error-free,understood or memorized and/or you're less tense, are part of what GENUINE PRACTICE is. Playing a piece from beginning to end, without any improvement at the end of the 30 minutes with your instrument can't be called practice. If done that way everyday, it may even be worse than not playing at all, because you'll be forming bad habits or getting used to your error-filled playing and hearing your mistakes until, to you, they sound correct.

Since you are all busy, I suggest that you budget your time and write down your practice plan. Concentrate on a few pieces or parts of your assignment, each practice time.Have a specific goal for each 10 or 15 minutes. Remember what your teacher told you about fingering, articulation, rhythm, phrasing, intonation (for violin and voice students), etc and DO IT! Stagger your practice if need be (divide your practice time into smaller chunks of time). And don't forget your technique and theory assignments and do listen to pieces on your CD .

For those of you who haven't mastered music reading, take time for this. You'll enjoy practicing more, when you can read faster and more accurately. You'll make music in a shorter time! And others will enjoy your playing sooner too.

Happy practicing!

How to Succeed

Notes from a selection of seminars I attended in the 2009 MTAC Convention:
http://glendalemtac.org/files/MTAC_2009_Convention_Notes__1_.pdf

What is the difference between Success and Failure? A book on discipline says, it is Choice and Not Chance.

Each year students take Music Exams: Certificate of Merit, Music Achievement Award (at the Glendale Branch) and/or the National Piano-Playing Guild Auditions. You all know the role that choice has in preparation for these events. I hope that this year more will choose to do their best- practice carefully and consistently, come for lessons regularly, grasp every opportunity to perform, do their theory workbook and be physically fit for the exam. The Convention recital for those who do well in CM exams will be in Los Angeles this coming July. In the last Convention, although 6 qualified to be in the recitals, only 3 performed because the venue was in Santa Clara. Aim to be a participant in this State-wide Convention.

Quotation for this week: "If you would hit the mark, you must aim a little above it; every arrow that flies feels the attraction of earth." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Bible Verse: "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might..." Ecc. 9:10

Student of the Month of September: Hannah Decolongon, 6th grader at Glendale Adventist Elementary School.

Besides piano, Hannah plays the harp and sings solos. In the Welcome Recital last Sept. 6, she played 2 solo pieces and a much applauded duet with her Mom, (who took lessons from me when she was a student at PUC -Phil). Bravo Braziliana by Glenda Austin was the exciting music. She has had only 2 and a half months lessons with me. Her previous teachers were Jojie Lagonera and Arlene Ferrolino, both of whom were former students of mine. Weva and Cesar of Eagle Rock are the proud parents of Hannah.

In her lesson last Tuesday, it was evident that Hannah practiced her new Christmas piece. It is always a delight for the teacher when the student comes prepared to play at least some of the assignment. Two weeks ago, Hannah blessed the Eagle Rock Presbyterian Church as she sang a solo and played her harp. She will take piano exams for the first time, come exam season.

To all piano students: Ask for your PIANO EXPLORER magazines, if you have not received the latest yet. And be sure to Read and be inspired and informed.

GREETINGS to our budding musicians!

Here's your teacher going hi-tech! Actually Cecile created this blogspot. Instead of our sporadic newsletter, we'll communicate through this blogspot, post pictures and share accomplishments, news, inspiration, concerns, announcements, etc. How about that?
